Lyn Vickery – Australia First Party (Senate)
This is a very large subject that requires urgent attention in a changing world. Briefly, we support lawful firearm ownership in Australia, as well as all those responsible shooters, collectors and enthusiasts who wish to safely pursue their hobby or require suitable firearms for the control of vermin. We do not support the use of heavy military assault rifles outside of the military. We do not support firearms in the hands of people with a documented mental history, serious criminal record or known members of radical (especially foreign) religious movements. Firearms ownership checks should drill down deep and clear the issue of citizenship and more before a firearm may be purchased or change hands. This need not be draconian for law abiding citizens – but must filter out inappropriate people.
Part of every first time firearm purchase process should include suitable safety training, acquaintance with the law, knowledge of correct storage of both weapon and ammunition and a test prior to conclusion of any transaction.
We would further support a basic military training and safety training program for all students male and female passing through secondary school as a part of a wider scheme to involved youngsters in first aid, fire, emergency and disaster protocols. Being a prepared nation is a part of being a smart nation.
We are not here advocating a return to national service, but rather a scheme that strengthens our spirit of community in beneficial ways.
