Several months ago the Western Australian Police Force ran an operation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia where a total of 224 firearm safes were checked to ensure they complied with the Western Australian Firearms Act.

Out of the 224 safes that were checked only 5 were found not to comply.  Of those that did not comply, many had only a single firearm – assumingly, the owner of these firearms had the firearm since before safes became mandatory. 

97.8% compliance is a great figure – a 100% target is preferable but not realistic.  But guaranteed, any criminal wanting to steal a firearm in the Pilbara region will encounter considerable difficulties.

This is proof that shooters, when compared to many other demographics of license holders in Western Australia (such as vehicle owners), are extremely responsible. 

Random gun safe checks are ongoing – ensure your firearms are correctly stored away in accordance with the Firearms Regulations – Section 11a of the Regulations covers the requirements of law and Schedule 4 outlines the minimum specifications of a firearms safe:
